Our visit to the Old Town of Aachen, a quaint little place, was a lovely experience. Apart from enjoying delicious authentic German beer, there was plenty to see around the town.

We trudged through the wet and chilly afternoon, visiting sites such as the Aachen Cathedral and the jaw dropping interior of Palatine Chapel.

The intricate carvings and workmanship covered in gold gave the place a magical aura.

With little indoor lighting and even less light filtering through the three-storey high, or more, stained glass panels covered in biblical scenes, the place still had the ability to ‘glow’. This is exactly what I absolutely love about these old European churches. There’s something just so captivating and mesmerizing about them. I could easily spend a day there just staring at the walls of the cathedral, feeling spellbound, trying my best to eyeball every single window pane, carved/decorated wall and ceiling.
This was Charlemagne’s Throne. Very modest.
