Rasnov Castle, another one of the wonders of Romania. Housing ruins that stirred the child-like curiosity in me, I scrambled across loose stone, and made my way excitedly up the hill to the fortress after getting off the funicular.
We learned that legend says, during a siege, the inhabitants of the fortress apprehended two Turks and made them dig a well in the middle of the citadel in exchange for their freedom. Due to the location of the fortress, the occupants had difficulty gaining access to water and used the prisoners as hard labour to dig them the much needed well. It took the prisoners 17 years to complete the dig, however, the fate of the prisoners is not known. Some say they were released, and others say they were executed.
The fortress was filled with ordinary houses of the time, which could easily be adapted to the fortification requirements. The residents used stone and bricks for building the walls and wood for the gates and platforms. To this day, there stands the ruins of a chapel, a school and over thirty houses.
